Flat battery - idiot!

Any tips for recharging a totally flat battery?

Recent snow (of the English variety - drifts as high as 3, sometimes 4 inches!) has meant I've not been out on my diavel this year. I can't trickle charge as no power point in the garage I keep it in. Road Angel tracker kept nagging me about low battery, I thought it would be fine though as could wheel her round to the front of my house and charge via an extension cable (on a clear day) there.

I reckoned without the steering lock.

Because the battery is completely dead the electrics won't even power up and as a result I can't release it and therefore can't wheel the bike.

Can anyone think of a solution beyond ringing Ducati roadside assistance and looking like the muppet I clearly am?

Ducati roadside is your only bet.

However, if you ended up changing the battery, get a lithium one as I gather on this forum. It stays good for long even in case of lack of usage. My battery went dead even after on a tender. Ducati replaced it under warranty. I tried to have them replace the lithium instead but they didn't. Even when I was ready to pay the difference.

Charged my totally dead battery (Yuasa 12volt acid) by hooking it up with my friends battery with the engine running for about 30 minutes. Now have it on a slow charge. This battery is a spare for my Shorai. Which totally went as flat as a pancake. Called Shorai (Using their $80 charger) they said charge it up for 20 minutes on a regular non sulphating charger which brought it back to life. Now have it at 13.30 volts on charge. My next step is to disconnect it and see how long it holds its charge. Left the Shorai on the bike in storage.Small trickle discharger from the clock and the Gps snitch. Maybe that took the battery to useless. So now i have it at home in the warm.

I have a similar problem re no power in garage. I took the battery out the bike and brought it indoors, I keep it in a spare room with a trickle charger hooked up and just switch the charger on from time to time (a few times a week) for a few hours when I'm in the house and awake (safety first!). Battery takes 10 mins to remove and is simple to do, it's hidden under the engine in the bellypan, you just need to disassemble the bellypan panels, then remove a securing strap type of gizmo by removing a couple of screws and Bob's your uncle!

Bellypan, Gizmo's and Bob's your uncle are all technical motorcycle engineering speak to those of you who are wondering.

Hmmm, thank you all for your consideration! Best option perhaps is the computer UPS thing, and to pay more attention. Although I worry that it wouldn't have the shove to deal with my completely flat battery. Perhaps Ducati and don't do it again is the way forward. The garage situation is such a pain, however I'll be moving in August so hopefully will be able to work around it in future! And there'll be no more stupid snow.

solar charger. snag one out of a VW and wire it to the battery.

I actually have an old battery that I can bring in and pigtail into the system I get too low.

I actually went out to start my bike on my dry battery the other day. It clicked immediately and I was bummed. Then I remembered about it "getting warm" so I turned the high beam on for 10 seconds and pushed the start button. Turn turn click. turn click. turn turn turn turn click. turn VROOOOOOOOM. I was quite impressed how it pulled together and seemed to get stronger.

The other maybe strange option is to buy a Shorai gel battery and charge that. The gel high capacity batteries are usually half the weight or lighter and hold charge for much longer (Shorai say it will hold for up to 12 months).

it's not ideal to buy another battery, but it's a weight crease!

My Shorai has been superb.
One thing I was wondering though. When a Lithium Iron battery does eventually fail, do you get any signs before hand that it's on it's way out, or does it just fail completely one day without notice?

Good point ,at a guess i would think it will fail like a standard type lead acid battery ? maybe it will self destruct
