Wanting a 1260S -- some questions.

Hello. Leaning towards a 2021 because I don't like matte finish. Are there any differences between 2021 and 2023 other than colors?
Also will the ohlins suspension be appropriate for me at 230lbs in full gear?
Will there be tank/ethanol issues? And why does this bike not have a metal tank like the XDiavel?
Also have the rear brake problems carried over to the Diavel?
Thanks for any advice.

I have a 2020 Red one.
There seems to be very little changes from 2019-2022, I know the footpeg bracket changed from -19 to -20 as the -19 would snap the shifter rod if dropped.

The 2022 in Europe is Euro 6 compliant (emissions) and have a different exhaust, not sure if that is the same in the US.

I'm about your weight and the Öhlins is fine, you can make it work, but it's easy to change the springs to accommodate your weight, I have thought about it, but I don't ride hard enough to really need it.
Not sure about the tank, I really don't think about it.
Fuel, well, I believe its E10 compliant, however I put premium on mine (98 in europe) I guess that is 93 in the US as at least in europe that fuel has no ethanol in it.
I think the engine sounds better, when I had the stock exhaust I thought the engine had less mechanical noises when using premium vs regular E5.

What rear brake problems? I haven't experienced or remember hearing about any.

basically a there doesnt exist a 2023 Diavel 1260 because the for 2023 its only the V4 but maybe they had some 2022 leftovers in the US and these are now 2023.

I have a 2022 Diavel 1260S and I am not sure what you mean about the tank because its for sure metal.

Thanks both for the information. Concerning the Diavel, I know nothing of the rear brake, but I have had issues on monsters, and multis, with rear brakes often needing to be bled.
Also, both of those models can suffer from tank issues (supposedly due to ethanol). I'm looking for a reason to believe that a Diavel will be different, but I doubt it.
Also, in Pennsylvania where I am there is ethanol in 93 octane.
The tank for the Diavel 1260 has a plastic cover that is painted. Would have liked it to be metal also but I think they might have done it for weights savings.

@Noggie I was under the impression that they started Euro 5 production for Diavel 1260 in 2021. That is what I see in the 2021 Ducati Diavel brochure. As for the exhaust, the only difference I can see is that they have different types of pipe interfaces and change from springs to clamps to lock the pipes in place. I guess the change is to make it more difficult to modify the exhaust under the new legislation. They also make db killers fixed and not easily removed for homologated Euro 5 exhausts.

As for the American model, I believe all models (2019 - 2022) use the same exhaust as the Euro 4 motorcycles and use the same mapping too.

@Schartho I’m wrong. Was working on the bike and got a better look at the tank and they are metal pieces. I thought they were plastic as it’s not a one piece tank like the xDiavel. I guess there magnetic tank bag wouldn’t work either if the tank plates were plastic.

I am using a magnetic tank bag with my Diavel so they are for sure magnetic
@Schartho How do you like the magnetic tank bag? Been looking at it but haven’t pulled the trigger on it. Wanted to hear some thoughts from owners first.

I have the one from Ducati, the model they recommend for Diavel 1260S. It is a good quality bag and for me a good or even the only solution when my wife is riding with me because I dont want to have the luggage kit.

The bag is expandable and in my opinion you can survive for some days with that size. So all in all I like it because I dont know anything better, with the magnetic fixing its of course also super practical but I think the magnetic attachment or fit to the tank could maybe be a little better. The magnets are strong enough etc but I mean to fit the shape of the tank,

@Schartho My main concern is with the bag scratching the tank as it’s perfect and practical for taking someone with you. Have you had any issues with that? I think it fits the XDiavel as well so not specifically for the Diavel 1260 so Ducati could have focused a bit more to the fit of our tanks. From the pictures it looks really nice.
Scratching/polishing will definitely occur where the magnets touch the tank (as I also started to polish the matte finish on the tank with my knees, and seen the same in Diavels being sold online).

But, if I remember correctly, a while ago I found some tips to use an adhesive tape, non-slip rubber mat or blu-tack on the touching points. All of these sound like a sub-optimum solution for me, though, so another option would be a tank bag that mounts on the adapter ring on the tank filler.

I know the scratching can be a a problem especially on the matt black side. I have so far been very careful to avoid it but my plan is to get the matt black side of the tank foiled soon as protection.

With regards to tank bags, well, I got a Givi ring and small tank bag for mine, virtually never used it as the bag completely blocks the instruments and you can't see how fast you are going.
I have bought the OEM tail bag from Ducati, and I have a backpack from XLMoto.

What you could do is put on Stek PPF (Paint protection film), this particular one is self healing, so even if you buff it with you knee or a magnet, when parked in the sun the heat will heal the scratches, or you can use a hair dryer or heat gun to do the same. I have it on my car to protect from rock chips, the car looks great and I thought I would possibly do the same on the tank and under the seat this year.

Back in 2020 I just put some white vinyl on the side of my tank to prevent my knee from scuffing the paint and the white vinyl was incorporated as a livery on my bike. I was inspired by a 2019 Monster 25th anniversary design that was red/white/green (Italian flag).
@Noggie The tail bag sounds like a great idea and I have been thinking about it. Currently just use a backpack and it’s worked pretty well for the moment. Was thinking of other options without doing the pannier side bags as I’m not a fan of the whole look and installation aspect

I have actually the same plan to put early this season, meaning relatively soon the PPF film on the yellow plate under the seat to protect it from stones.
Have discussed with the company who will do that also about foiling the tank with PPF foil and they say they can do it but the problem is the logo. Obviously they cannot foil over so they need to cut the logos out and I am not totally sure yet if that will be perfect so have not decided on the tank yet.

The tail bag is great, I have that also and use it when riding alone. much better than the tank bag but its smaller volume and you need to pack efficient.
I think its not really comfortable to ride long tours with backpack and I dont like the look of the side bags so I am not going to have those

@Noggie just a comment / question about the tail bag since you also have that. When I installed it I noticed that the straps you fux under the seat for holding the bag were very short, meaning much shorter than they are supposed to be. I managed by extending the holding straps on the bag to the absolute maximum length, so it works fine and I really like this bag but I found it it a little strange that they made the straps so extremely short. Did you have the same?
