Hi all

Sharing this as a heads up to check if you have any rear shock or rear end handling issues, or any probs with preload/sag settings not staying static.

The Diavel's just been in for its major service and whilst there I asked them to check the rear linkage and Ohlins shock, and refurb it all if needed - it appeared that the bike was dealing out preload and the rear end generally started to handled like a dog, with a bit of a graunching noise now & then too. It all came on quite suddenly too.

Pulling the shock its clear where the problem lay - This is the stock rose joint from the rear linkage after 15k miles.

To explain what you're looking at, the brass outer is just sheet formed brass, microns thick, and has spread and worn through after the fabric inner shell / liner wore out - that black bit that's that's more than half gone which the joint rested and rotated on. When that inner fabric shell wears out the rose joint has approx 3mm of play between the inner and outer, which explains why it was riding like crap.

Whilst apart I've had all the other linkage bearings changed out too (all were tough looking parts with little or no wear), and this rose joint has been replaced with a vastly upgraded aftermarket bearing.

Worth cleaning, lubricating (if you can) and checking for play in this part every 1000-2000 miles, between the services. If anyone wants to know about the upgraded part, ping X81 (he's a member/sponsor here still I think) a message

Good call. While checking this, check the hose since it can be damaged by the exhaust heat. Mine has this issue and Ohlins has sent a new hose to replace it. They are also suggesting insulate the hose with heat wrap or a shield so that it doesn't happen again.
I am in Florida where is always hot, so people in the colder areas might not be prone to have such issue.

Well, that's a nasty surprise. The service manual shows the part (848.4.049.1A - Ball Joint), but does not discuss it at all. Is it press-fit or loose?

Can you tell us anything more about a better replacement - such as a supplier and part number - other than your reference to X81 ?

Thanks for the important warning, though I can't imagine most owners doing all the work to check that part frequently.

The stock Ducati part is priced at US$85. Obscene !!

Hi all,

Yeah this rose joint was fairly well destroyed. Just looking at the construction and you can see it's only a press together jobbie so not going to be massively strong.

The symptom for this was excessive rear sag or if you're able to get the rear off the ground you'll find play in the swingarm movement when lifted up.

The replacement I sourced is an entirely better bearing indeed. Ground steel casing rather than rolled and pressed. Price was decent enough as well at around £42.00 inc VAT but I'm trying to get a better price for buying bulk. These are from a Motorsport bearing supplier so I'm hoping well specked.

Does this bearing require a press to remove and install?

Thanks, X81. I'm looking forward to your posting of specific info on replacement part options. Mine isn't showing overt symptoms, but I can't imagine it's healthy, given the cheap design.

Any update on sourcing the replacement?

Pardon my ignorance, but where exactly does this part is located in the rear suspension system ?
Thank you very much, I have a "squeezy" sound every time the rear moves
It is number 17 in the attached diagram.

Sorry for the slow reply guys, rarely get the time!

Yes, can confirm this is is part 17 on ReidMcT's diagram.

I actually posted it up here because I've not heard of others failing but there's also no obvious cause. I do ride 2 up sometimes as the lady likes coming on the bike, and I have done a bit of touring so its had a few wet days on motorways, but I travel ultra-light. Generally I'm on good roads too so its not taken a beating over potholes or rough ground. I'm circa 85kg and the bike's been running on Ducati's settings for the first few thousand miles and then switched to Ohlins front & rear, with a proper suspension setup and correct adjustment whenever carrying any additional loads. Its been used but nothing there points to unusual use or loads

All I can say is that having held the part, it looks like something from a Toy, not a beast of a motorcycle. Considering the outer is thin pressed brass and the inner race is a piece of fabric I'm surprised we haven't seen more. That said, I've had other makes of bike where one or two bearings fail early (usually with riders that like me that cover an above average mileage per year) and a few years later the rest of the club starts reporting the same.

Worth checking it if you're there, or can.

Don't panic though, it'll give you a crap ride and a graunching, I don't think it'll cause anything worse without a lot of prior warning!

I'm still keen to know where to get a better-quality replacement.

I didn't source this one so can't advise, but it would be a UK supplier. When upgrading bearings on other bikes to replace cheap factory parts (Sprocket carrier bearings on Suzuki's for example), I usually just google a bearing or motorsports bearing supplier and give them the Dims. Many parts come from the same factories anyway (Suzuki branded parts are down specced and rebadged Koyo parts, I believe).

I'm sure you'll have more local options in the US (You could fit the UK into Texas and we'd have room to spread out!).
